And now for another edition of Native Foodie in the Spotlight! This time around we have Sam, who frequents our Costa Mesa location, can make a mean salsa, and is a basketball champion.

Born: Puerto Rico
Grew up: Guatemala
Live in: Riverside
What is your sign?
Scorpio, doesn’t that sound tough… better than like, Libra or something weak like that. I’m a scorpio… suckas. But I don’t believe in any of that stuff anyway.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a university chaplain.
What do you want to be when you “grow-up”?
A baseball player like Albert Pujols… when he is hitting “hon rons” (home runs, as he calls them)
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their names?
No. I’m allergic to most living things.
What should we know about you?
I love food so much… And I firmly believe that it should NEVER be eaten: alone, standing up or while driving.
If you were to come back as an animal what would you like it to be?
A very well kept small Chihuahua owned by a very rich old lady.
What is your favorite current menu item at Native Foods Café?

Favorite Native Foods’ dessert?
I don’t eat sweets. That’s a lie. Cheesecake. How do you do that without using dairy? It’s miraculous.
Do you have a signature dish you make at home?
I make the best Salsa known to humankind. Period.

I like my local Riverside flavs:

What was your first concert ever?
Handel’s Messiah. Performed by a small Baptist church choir.
Little talent, but so much heart. That’s the truth.
Do you like to dance? If so, what is your favorite song to get down to?
I prefer to call it “rapid repositioning”, and no, I have no skill in that area.
What do you do in your free time?
Eat. Talk. Listen. Read.
Play basketball with my son. I beat him every time, he is not very good. Yeah, yeah, I’m three feet taller, but whatever.

Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard
It’s so rich, so good. Life changing.
Do aliens exist?
Of course. Did you not watch Men in Black? Sheesh.
Who do you think has been the most influential person in the past 100 years and why?
Chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate. Dark, at least 70%. Organic, from the Dominican Republic. Wow!

Depends on the mood, time of day, weather conditions, etc.
